Why hamsters make great pets

Category: Hobbies and Crafts
By Fong Yoong Kheong

Hamsters are small cute furry nocturnal mammals which are not understood by most people. I had hamsters for about 5 years and I find that hamsters make great pets. They simply make you happy without much hassle.

Hamsters take up a very small part of your living space. Most pet owners house them in cages and the cages take up just a very small area, hence other family members will not be affected somewhat. They entertain themselves with their running wheels and perhaps some toys, gnawing wood blocks and enjoying their occasional snacks. They just need some time out of the owner to play with them, to cuddle them, unlike cats and dogs which you need to pay much attention on.

It is also easy to clean up the mess left behind by hamsters. Depending on the size of the cage and the number of hamsters and the type of bedding you use, it may take just 2 times per week to clean up the living quarters of the hamsters. Sand bath and an occasional water bath suffices for hamsters. For the beauty-conscious owners, perhaps some brushing of the fur will do the job. They do not cost the owners much cash in keeping them.

They have those big watery eyes that always seem to be staring at you. Simply looking at the cute animal will brighten up your day and make you smile. Look at their behaviours, often funny, in their cages and you will forget your sorrows for the day.

Although hamsters are not for everyone, I believe that hamsters make great pets!
