Earning Cash from your own blog

Category: Tutorial - Internet Business

Learn how to generate income through your very own blog, with little or no costs. This is a simple tutorial that covers the topics necessary for a beginner to start earning immediately.

Objective : To build a blog that generates income

Scope

  • Finding a web hosting site
  • Choosing a Domain Name
  • Designing Webpage
  • Content
  • Earning Cash
  • Getting traffic to Site

The Internet connects together a huge mass of people from all over the world. And if you are able to reach out to these people, you can definitely earn quite a lot. In this lesson, I'll teach you how to earn cash online through your own blog. Many people are earning from their own blogs, for example xiaxue.blogspot.com. Even online community sites such as Friendster, Multiply and Zorpia are earning money through your blog, your very own writings. Here is a step-by-step tutorial that unleashes the potential of your blog or personal homepage in earning cash.

Step 1: Finding a web hosting site.

As a start, you might want to find some free web hosts. These include geocities, fortunecity, and Bravenet. I would personally recommend Bravenet because of the many resources and web tools it provides along with the free hosting of your blog. We will touch more on that later.

If you have a capital to start off with, you might wish to pay for premium web hosting services. This way, your site will be freed of advertisements from the free hosting company. There are many Web hosting companies around the World, so you do have to be careful when making the right choice. Basically, we need to look at these few factors before paying for the service:

1. Disk Space - The space required for all your file storage.

2. Bandwith - The amount of information downloadable from the webserver over a prescribed period of time.

3. Stability and Security - How often do they maintain the server and will it make your web down temporarily? Firewall security or not?

Step 2: Choosing a Domain Name

You can go to http://www.freedomainregistration.com to check the availability of the domain name that you want. It costs roughly about US$20 per year to buy a .com domain.

If you are using a free web hosting service, your member name would probably go to the end of the URL, for example, http://www.wecaretuition.com/MEMBERNAME. Nevertheless, it's always good to put some thought into your domain name or member name.

1. Make the name easy to spell and remember. A negative example would be to name your site http://w3CaR3tu1t10n.com.

2. Make it the theme of your blog or homepage. If you are writing about your own life story, probably you would want to give it a name like http://www.badboystory.com as an example. This would make your domain sound more interesting than just http://www.johnblog.com.

Step 3: Designing your webpage

Many free web hosting companies provide free usage of webpage designing softwares. Bravenet, for example, allows you to choose from a variety of templates and guides you through building your site. Geocities allows you to download a programme to work with your page.

Similarly, you can use WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) softwares. I would recommend Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft Frontpage, and I would favour the former over the latter. Using these programmes, it is possible to build an entire set without any knowledge of HTML and other programming language. However, having some basic knowledge of HTML would help at times.

Step 4: Content

The Content we are talking about here is other than the main content (i.e. your blog content, your homepage about cats, etc). Other than just words and words, you might need to have other interesting contents to attract people to your site. Some examples include having a guestbook, chatroom, message board, etc. Such contents create interactivity among online users and definitely will increase traffic to your site. Bravenet provides lots of free scripts and free contents, although you can pay for premium content.

Step 5: Earning Cash

Now, finally to the most important part, and the reason for building your site... Earning cash. There are many ways to earn cash.

The most common way of earning cash through your site is by joining affiliate and referral programmes. By joining affiliate programmes as publishers, you rent out space from your site to other companies to put out their advertisement. And they will pay you either when your visitors click on their links (pay-per-click) or even when your visitors land on your site. You may wish to join Google Adsense, Adbrite, Clickbank. Clickbank allows you to choose the products or services that you wish to put on your site, and you earn commisions when transactions are made.

Step 6: Getting traffic to your site

The easiest way of getting traffic to your site is simply advertising or being affiliates, but I don't recommend doing so because you are just creating your own blog and your capital might be low. Below are some ways to increase traffic to your site.

WeCare Ads:  Search Engine Cloaker: We are proud to help our customers achieve number 1 rankings in all engines for 10+ years.

  • Join web rings
  • Exchange banners and links with other sites to get more publicity
  • Submit your site to Search Engines (It's free to submit to Google and Yahoo!)
  • Learn ways to improve your positioning in search engines (This would take another lesson to explain the concept, so we won't have it covered here)
  • Share your site in forums, emails, etc.
